Last year, George Floyd died at the hands of Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck for about nine minutes. He has been charged with second-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years, as well as second-degree manslaughter. This morning the Minneapolis City Council has unanimously voted to approve a $27 million settlement to George Floyd's estate. The attorney for George Floyd's family Benjamin Crump said, "This is the largest pre-trial settlement in a wrongful death case ever, would be for the life of a Black man sends a powerful message that Black lives do matter and police brutality against people of color must end." George's sister, Bridgett Floyd said, "We are pleased that this part of our tragic journey to justice for my brother George is resolved." Wow, now we just have to wait on the results of the criminal case against the officers.
