Milwaukee currently seems to be in a good space right now with our sports teams performing well, new developments and a buzzing music scene. For years we have been over looked and lacked consistent outlets especially for minority youth and those wanting to pursue the arts. In recent years I've noticed a positive change and things are starting to become more progressive and more interest in our local scene. So when I was approached in early 2018 about joining the board for a new initiative in Milwaukee focusing on music and all ages I was all in. The New State is a historical redevelopment project that will transform the old State Theater, originally a silent movie theater, into a community music hub for all ages. Located at 2612 W State St which hasn't been considered a good neighborhood in the city for sometime, we hope to change the narrative and add some new energy.
The New State will be a 415 capacity all ages sober venue hosting 150+ live events per year, supporting 180+ micro-businesses rent-able sound engineering studios including Mammyth Audio a Storefront for local artists to sell art, music, and merchandise Classes and workshops focusing on youth, modern music (hip hop/rap, electronic), performance skills and professional development as musicians. West Side Arts Un, Limited/WSAU aims to provide 40+ hours of music-related instruction per week We have plans to open in 2020. To learn more or to donate please visit www.newstatemke.org
