Black History Facts- The Black Panther Party

This Black History fact is in honor of the Black Panther Party aka The Black Panthers were founded in Oakland, CA in 1966 by Huey P Newton and Bobby Seale. The Black Panthers started out as a political party with the core practice of arming citizens'/ patrols to monitor the behavior of officers of Oakland PD and challenge their abuse of power and fight police brutality. The Panthers wore black berets and black leather jackets which would later become iconic At its peak in , the Black Panther Party had roughly 2,000 members they spread from Oakland to Chicago , NYC and beyond. In addition to fighting for black people's safety and political rights the Panthers got involved with creating community programs. One of their most successful was the Free Breakfast for Children program which started in 1969. Unfortunately by the 1970's the movement took a turn for the worse as they were targeted by the FBI and had inter-turmoil.
