Black History Facts- Nat Turner (Leader of the slave rebellion)

This Black History Month fact is in honor of Nat Turner who grew up as a slave, became a pastor then later led the effective slave rebellion in Virginia during August of 1831. Turner is a controversial figure to some because of the violence that occurred during his revolt and to others he is viewed as a hero for fighting back and freeing black people. He was born in Virginia on the He was born on theplantation of Benjamin Turner, who allowed him to be instructed in reading, writing, and religion. Turner would tell his congregation and fellow slaves that he felt a calling and was chosen by God to lead them from bondage. On August 21,1831 the rebellion began when he and six other slaves killed the Travis family, and managed to secure arms and horses. Turner along with the help of between 50 and 75 other slaves rebellion sparked a movement that changed slavery forever.
