Ella Fitzgerald

1917-1996


Was a world renown Jazz singer know as the "First lady of Song". Fitzgerald was raised in New York City and sang with various bands before becoming a solo artist.  In 1958 she broke barriers by becoming the first black female artist to receive a Grammy. She would later go on to win 13 more Grammy awards  and also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom award in 1992.
