George Washington Carver
1864–1943
Former slave... who became a college graduate and great agricultural chemist as a free man.
Washington Carver is best know for discovering over hundreds of uses of the peanut, sweet potatoes and
soybeans. One of his most popular inventions that is still used to this day is peanut butter. He later went on
to work at the Tuskegee Institute as director of the department of agricultural research. He dedicated the
rest of his life to teaching and improving the South's economy especially for African Americans.
