Carter G Woodson 1875-1950
Was an author and historian widely regarded as the "Father of Black History Month"
for creating a press release in February 1926 announcing Negro History Week. This was to create
awareness in black's of their worth and to illustrate more than a past of being slaves.
One of his most famous work's was entitled "The Mis-Education of the Negro".
In 1976, on the 50th anniversary of the first Negro History Week, the Association officially made the shift to
Black History Month. Since then, every U.S. president has issued a proclamation honoring the spirit of Black
History Month
