Black History Month isn't off to a great start at one elementary school in Queens, New York, where teachers have come under fire for refusing to let fourth graders study Malcolm X. According to the New York Daily News, teachers at PS 201 told students who were interested in the civil rights figure that he was "violent" and "bad."
Parent Cleatress Brown was so upset that she told her son to write a report on Malcolm X and turn it in anyway. She says, "I'm outraged. As a teacher, you're imposing your opinion on a bunch of kids."
According to a survey, 43 percent of the kids who attend the school are African-American.
TeeRoy's 2 Cents:
- Sounds like the teachers want Black History Month, but on their terms.
- This is actually a good lesson for the kids. Will probably make them pay more attention to the stories around Malcolm X.
- Wonder what sort of grade they gave the kid who turned in his Malcolm X paper anyway.
