Veteran femcee MC Lyte will receive the I Am Hip Hop Award at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. She'll join the likes of Salt-N-Pepa, NasKRS-OneRussell Simmons, Ice Cube and Rakim.

The New York rapstress has put out seven studio albums, including the 1993′s Ain’t No Other featuring the gold-selling song “Ruffneck.” She's also the founder of the Hip-Hop Sisters Foundation and president of the Sunni Gyrl management agency, and has recently helped launch the iLEAD youth program in South Africa.

The BET Hip-Hop Awards take place in Atlanta on September 28th and air on BET on October 15th.

  • Long overdue. Congrats to Lyte.
  • They don't put MC in front of her name for nothing!
  • Latifah hasn't won this award yet, but Salt-N-Pepa took it in 2010.
