HEROIN: A Growing Threat Across the U.S.

HEROIN: A Growing Threat Across the U.S.

The country's top law enforcement officials sounded the alarm Wednesday that heroin and the addiction to other opiates is now killing more people than violent crimes and car crashes in some communities.

Officials warn that the drug is more readily available, is cheaper than prescription opiods and has a deadly purity these days. In New York City, for example, there were 730 drug overdose deaths in 2012, with half of those estimated to be tied to heroin or prescription opiates. That number almost doubles the number of homicides in the city during the same time frame.
