Jason Collins and Michael Sam have paved the way for another athlete to come out. University of Massachusetts sophomore guard Derrick Gordon has become the first openly gay player in men's college basketball.
Gordon came out to his family and teammates two weeks ago, just after the Minutemen were eliminated from the NCAA tournament. Gordon decided to announce his decision publicly as well. After coming out to ESPN, Gordon posted a picture on his Instagram of himself wearing a shirt that said "Be True." He wrote under the picture, "This is the happiest I have ever been in my 22 Years of living. No more HIDING!!! Just want to live life happy and play the sport that I love."
Sam, who became the first potential NFL Draft pick to say he was gay, tweeted his support of Gordon, saying, "Many congratulations to you Derrick Gordon – you have so many in your corner and we're all proud and rooting for you. (Bleacher Report)
